Who is the Man Crafting the Smoking Barrels Group?

Ken Basuki, third-place winner at the 2015 SCAI coffee cupping competition, and Joni Lima, a coffee and tea enthusiast and National Certified Coffee Judge, are childhood friends with a shared passion. They bonded over games in elementary school and later pursued electronic engineering in US and Singapore.

After graduation, their conversations shifted to coffee as they explored various coffee varieties abroad. This hobby grew into a serious venture, and they started roasting coffee together using a 500-gram machine.

Their passion led to the establishment of Smoking Barrels Craft Coffee, a roastery originally headquartered in Radio Dalam. This marked the start of their journey in the coffee and tea business, which later evolved into Smoking Barrels Group.

Why "Smoking Barrels"?

Ken and Joni struggled to find the perfect brand name until Ken suggested "Smoking Barrels." Inspired by the 1998 film Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels and the imagery of a smoking gun barrel, it also symbolizes coffee roasting, where smoke is released from the drum.

The name sparked a "weapon" theme, leading to product names like Cannon, Dynamite, Big Bang, Double Barrel, Flintlock, Matchlock—old weapons now prized by collectors. "Smoking" represents roasting smoke, while "Barrels" nods to storage containers.

Metaphorically, Smoking Barrels embodies the roasting process, rich aroma, and the art of crafting complex, high-quality coffee.
